Aldgate Overbridge (LUL) Assessment

As part of a multi-million pound project by the City of London Corporation to give a major uplift to the Aldgate area, enhancing safety for road users, improving cycle routes, improving pedestrian routes and connections, introducing greener space, creating new public spaces and improving lighting in the area, an assessment of the G64 Overbridge has been undertaken.

Girdering G64 is a 3 span covered way constructed c.1881. The structure is located in front of Aldgate Station, supporting Aldgate High Street over 4 No. tracks and platforms of the Metropolitan and Circle Lines. The deck comprises 8 No. longitudinal wrought iron plate girders supporting either wrought iron cross girders with wrought iron plate on top or brick jack arches. The deck is supported by 2 No. intermediate cast iron columns and brick retaining walls at both ends forming the sides of the station.

The structure is supporting approximately 2.0m of fill containing various services topped by roadway and footway surfacing. Currently, Aldgate High Street is one-way traffic with 4 lanes. Abnormal vehicles are prohibited in the high street due to the low HB rating of the structure.

My responsibility was to undertake the Principal Inspection of the bridge during Engineering Hours and also undertake trial holes to expose the girders and check their condition. I have also prepared the Principal Inspection and Approval in Principle Reports for the Structural Assessment. I have also been involved in the assessment calculations using BD21
